We’re looking for an Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join our Blood Transfusion and Haematology service at HCA Laboratories, based at Shropshire House in London. This is a key role within our established laboratory night service, supporting a high-volume, clinically complex caseload across HCA Hospitals and services. With access to advanced technology, specialist testing and a strong multidisciplinary team around you, this role offers the opportunity to work with a high level of professional autonomy while delivering safe, timely and accurate results when they matter most.

As an Advanced Biomedical Scientist working nights, you’ll be part of a highly skilled, supportive team providing a comprehensive out-of-hours pathology service. The service handles complex and urgent work across haematology and blood transfusion, requiring sound judgement, confidence in decision making and a calm, methodical approach. You’ll take ownership of your shift, supported by robust processes, modern analysers and clear escalation pathways.

You’ll initially work day shifts during a structured training period of three to six months, depending on your existing experience, before moving into the night rota. Once established on nights, you’ll continue to attend regular update training days to maintain competence and support ongoing development.

At HCA UK we care about what you care about. We care that you want to deliver the very best care. We care that you want a career you can be proud of. We care that you want working conditions that support your health and wellbeing. Let us care for you and your career, the same way you do for others.

What you’ll do:

  • Deliver accurate, timely processing, validation and authorisation of haematology and blood transfusion samples during night shifts
  • Provide advanced scientific support, including interpretation of results, escalation of issues and communication of critical values
  • Ensure analysers, equipment and quality systems are maintained in line with UKAS and MHRA standards
  • Support and supervise MLAs when required, contributing to a safe and efficient night service
  • Handover effectively to the day team, ensuring continuity of care and service quality

What you’ll bring:

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Recent laboratory experience in at least one blood sciences discipline
  • Experience working within haematology and or blood transfusion, with the ability to authorise results
  • Flexibility to work day shifts during the initial training period and attend ongoing update training once on nights
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in line with IBMS and HCPC requirements
