We are looking for experienced CNC Vertical Borer Setter / Operator / Programmers to join our established machine shop.

The successful candidates will be responsible for setting, operating and programming CNC Vertical Boring/Lathe machines, producing medium to heavy-sized workpieces to customer drawings and specifications.

This is a skilled, hands-on position suited to an experienced machinist who can confidently take responsibility for a component from drawing and programming through to machining and final self-inspection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set, operate and programme CNC Vertical Boring/Lathe machines.
  • Programme using Fanuc controls, with experience of Cimco CAD/CAM or Fusion advantageous.
  • Read and interpret customer-issued engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Select appropriate tooling and establish suitable cutting parameters.
  • Set tools, offsets and workholding accurately.
  • Machine medium to heavy workpieces to required dimensions, tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Carry out self-inspection of completed and in-process components.
  • Identify and rectify machining issues where required.
  • Make programme and offset adjustments to maintain component quality.
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
  • Operate manual machining equipment when CNC work is quiet, supporting the wider machine shop as required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
  • Work in accordance with company Health & Safety and quality procedures.
  • Work overtime when required to meet production and customer requirements.
Essential Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • Proven experience setting, operating and programming CNC Vertical Boring/Lathe machines.
  • Experience using Fanuc control systems.
  • The ability to programme and edit CNC programmes confidently.
  • Experience working from customer-issued engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience machining medium to heavy workpieces.
  • The ability to accurately self-inspect finished components.
  • A good understanding of tooling, speeds, feeds and machining processes.
  • Experience and knowledge of manual machining, with a willingness to operate manual machines when CNC work is quiet.
  • A strong commitment to quality and attention to detail.
  • A willingness to work overtime when required.
Desirable Experience

Experience with the following would be advantageous:

  • Cimco CAD/CAM
  • Fusion
  • Large-diameter or heavy-component machining.
  • One-off and small/medium batch production.
  • Tight-tolerance precision engineering.
  • Working within a general/heavy engineering machine shop environment.


Shift & Overtime DetailsDay Shift

Monday – Thursday: 08:00 – 16:30

Friday: 08:00 – 13:00

37 paid hours per week

  • 30-minute unpaid lunch break Monday–Thursday.
  • No lunch break required on Friday.
  • Day shift employees are expected to achieve a minimum of 11 hours' overtime per week.
  • Standard overtime: Time + 1/3
  • Sunday overtime: Time + 1/2
Day Shift Pay

CNC: £18.00 – £20.00 per hour

Manual: £17.00 – £19.00 per hour

Rates are skill-dependent and exclude any applicable shift allowance.


Night Shift

Monday – Thursday: 18:00 – 06:00

4 × 12-hour shifts

  • Paid lunch break.
  • Night shift hours are paid at Time + 1/3.
  • Additional overtime is available on:
  • Friday after 13:00
  • Saturday
  • Sunday
  • Additional night-shift overtime is paid at Time + 1/2.
Night Shift Pay

CNC: £18.00 – £20.00 per hour

Manual: £17.00 – £19.00 per hour

Rates are skill-dependent and exclude any applicable shift allowance.

We operate a company pension scheme with a total weekly contribution of 8%:

Health & Safety Bonus

We operate a Health & Safety-based bonus scheme.

Employees who meet the qualifying criteria can receive a £250 bonus every 6 months.


The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced CNC Vertical Borer Setter / Operator / Programmer who is comfortable working on medium to heavy engineering components and can work independently from customer drawings.

You should be confident with Fanuc-controlled CNC machinery, have strong setting and programming skills, and be capable of producing components accurately while carrying out your own inspection.

A good working knowledge of manual machining is also essential, as you will be expected to support the wider machine shop when CNC work is quiet.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, is reliable, quality-focused and willing to work overtime when required.
