Remote Night Shift Jobs UK: A Work-From-Home Guide
Which night jobs you can genuinely do from home in the UK, what they pay, the hours they run, how to spot fake listings, and where to find real remote overnight roles.
“Remote night jobs” is one of the most searched phrases on Nightshifts — and one of the most misunderstood. Most overnight work happens somewhere physical: a warehouse, a ward, a depot. But a real and growing set of night roles can be done from your kitchen table, mostly in customer support, IT, healthcare advice and work for overseas time zones. This guide covers which jobs those are, what they pay, the hours to expect, the scams to avoid, and how to land one.
What counts as a remote night shift job?
A remote night shift job is a role you do from home, where most of your hours fall in the evening or overnight — typically somewhere between 7pm and 7am. Some are full overnight shifts (for example 22:00–07:00), others are late evening shifts such as 7pm–3am or “twilight” shifts that finish around midnight. Under the Working Time Regulations, you count as a night worker if you regularly work at least three hours between 11pm and 6am — and that applies at home exactly as it does on site.
It's worth separating three things that often get lumped together: fully remote roles (you never go in), hybrid roles (home on some nights, on site on others, common in IT and contact centres), and on-call roles (you're at home but available to respond, such as out-of-hours duty teams). Job adverts don't always make the difference clear, so check before you apply.
Remote night jobs you can actually do from home
Customer service and contact centres
The biggest source of home-based night work. Banks, insurers, utilities, travel companies, breakdown services and retailers run overnight lines for emergencies, claims, bookings and international customers. Roles include customer service adviser, claims handler, reservations agent and live chat agent. Most employers provide the laptop and headset; you supply a quiet room and a reliable broadband connection.
IT support and monitoring
Service desk analysts, network operations (NOC) engineers and systems administrators keep systems running overnight and carry out maintenance when usage is low. Entry-level service desk roles are often open to people with good problem-solving skills and some basic IT knowledge; monitoring and engineering roles usually ask for experience or certifications. These tend to be among the better-paid remote night roles.
Healthcare advice and triage
Telephone and video triage services run around the clock. Clinicians such as nurses, paramedics and GPs can work remote out-of-hours shifts, and some services also employ non-clinical call handlers or health advisers working from home. Clinical roles need the relevant registration; non-clinical roles usually come with paid training.
Work for other time zones
A UK evening is the working day somewhere else. Customer support for US or Australian companies, online tutoring and English teaching for students in Asia, and international sales or account management all create remote roles whose hours land in the UK evening or overnight. Check whether you'd be employed through a UK payroll or treated as self-employed — it affects your rights, tax and holiday pay.
Other home-based night work
- Transcription, captioning and subtitling — often freelance and paid per audio minute, so hours are flexible but income varies.
- Content moderation and trust & safety — reviewing posts or reports for platforms that operate 24/7.
- Social care emergency duty and out-of-hours coordination — usually needs relevant qualifications and is often on-call from home.
- Online bookkeeping, data entry and admin for businesses that process overnight — less common, and an area where fake listings are frequent (see the scams section below).
What remote night jobs pay
Pay depends far more on the role than on the time of day. As a rough guide from listings we see:
| Role type | Typical pay | Night premium? |
|---|---|---|
| Customer service / live chat | Around minimum wage to £14 per hour | Sometimes — check the advert |
| Claims and reservations | £12–£15 per hour | Sometimes |
| IT service desk | £24,000–£32,000 per year | Often, as a shift allowance |
| NOC / systems engineer | £30,000–£50,000+ per year | Usually built into salary or allowance |
| Clinical triage (nurses, paramedics) | Banded NHS or agency rates | Unsocial hours enhancements usually apply |
| Freelance transcription / tutoring | Varies widely, often per task | No — you set your own hours |
There is no legal requirement in the UK to pay extra for night work, so a night premium is a contract term, not a right. You must still be paid at least the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage for every hour you work, including at home. Compare offers on the hourly equivalent: a £26,000 salary over 37.5 hours a week is about £13.33 an hour. Nightshifts shows shift times and any night premium on each listing so you can compare properly.
Your rights when you work nights from home
- Hours: night workers shouldn't work more than an average of 8 hours in any 24-hour period (usually averaged over 17 weeks).
- Health assessment: your employer must offer a free health assessment before you start night work and regularly afterwards.
- Breaks and rest: you're entitled to a 20-minute break if you work more than 6 hours, and 11 hours' rest between working days.
- Workstation: your employer should assess your home set-up under the display screen equipment rules and give you what you need to work safely.
How to spot fake remote night jobs
Remote and “easy online night work” listings attract more scams than any other kind of job. Walk away if you see any of these:
- You're asked to pay for training, a starter kit, equipment or a background check before you start.
- The “interview” happens only on WhatsApp or Telegram, or you're hired without speaking to anyone.
- Pay looks far above the norm for simple tasks — such as being paid to like videos, rate products or “complete orders” with your own money first.
- You're asked to receive and forward parcels or money. These are reshipping and money-mule scams, and taking part can be a crime.
- There's no verifiable company name, address or website, or the email comes from a free email account.
If you think you've been targeted, report it to Action Fraud (or Police Scotland if you're in Scotland). Genuine employers never ask you to pay to get a job.
How to get a remote night shift job
- Choose your lane: customer support, IT, healthcare or another time zone. Each has its own keywords — “overnight customer service”, “service desk night”, “remote triage”.
- Prepare your set-up: a quiet room you can close the door on, wired or reliable broadband, and a plan for sleeping during the day.
- Put home-working evidence on your CV: self-management, hitting targets without supervision, the tools you know (Teams, Zendesk, Salesforce, ServiceNow).
- Say you want nights. Employers struggle to fill overnight rotas, and stating it up front sets you apart from applicants who'd rather have days.
- Expect a video interview and often a typing, call-handling or IT test. Check the exact shift times, rota pattern and any night premium before accepting.
Is remote night work right for you?
Working nights from home removes the commute and the cost of getting to work, which matters most in the small hours when public transport is thin. It suits night owls, parents who want to be home in the day and anyone in a rural area. The downsides are real too: it can be isolating, it's easy to let daytime sleep slip when you're already at home, and the same health considerations apply as with any night work. Blackout curtains, a fixed sleep window and a clear boundary between your “office” and the rest of the house make a big difference.

Frequently asked questions
Are there remote night shift jobs in the UK?
Yes. The main ones are overnight customer service and live chat, IT service desk and monitoring, telephone health triage, and roles supporting customers in other time zones. Most need a quiet room and reliable broadband; employers usually provide the equipment.
What work-from-home jobs can I do at night with no experience?
Customer service, live chat, reservations and claims-handling roles often take people without direct experience and provide paid training. Entry-level IT service desk roles are another option if you're comfortable troubleshooting computers.
Do remote night jobs pay more than day jobs?
Sometimes. UK law doesn't require a night premium, so it depends on the employer. Many contact centres and IT teams pay a shift allowance for overnight hours — check the advert or ask before you accept.
Are there part-time or evening remote jobs, like 7pm to 3am?
Yes. Late evening and twilight shifts are common in customer support and in work for overseas time zones. Search for “evening” or “twilight” shifts as well as “night shift” to find them.
How can I tell if a remote night job is a scam?
Be wary of any job that asks you to pay upfront, hires you over WhatsApp or Telegram without a proper interview, promises high pay for simple online tasks, or asks you to handle parcels or money. Report suspected job scams to Action Fraud.
